AIAA Space Logistics Technical Committee

Welcome to the webpage of the AIAA Space Logistics Technical Committee!

Space Logistics is defined as the theory and practice of driving space system design for operability and supportability, and of managing the flow of materiel, services, and information needed throughout a space system lifecycle.

Why is Space Logistics crucial?

Space Logistics is crucial across all space sectors including NASA, DoD, and commercial industries exploring the Earth's orbits, cislunar space, the Moon, and beyond. Space Logistics plays a key role in designing large-scale NASA campaigns for human space exploration of the Moon and Mars. For DoD, particularly for the U.S. Space Force, Space Mobility and Logistics have been identified as one of the spacepower core competencies in its doctrine. In the dawn of the commercial lunar and low-Earth-orbit (LEO) human spaceflight industries, Space Logistics has been a critical accept to consider in order to achieve the business feasibility of upcoming commercial space stations. There is a timely need for advanced space logistics analysis and its optimization.

What does AIAA Space Logistics Technical Committee (SLTC) do?

The SLTC promotes the modeling and management of the astro-logistics supply chain from Earth and on to destinations throughout the solar system as well as the system architecture strategies to minimize both logistics requirements and operational costs of human and robotic operations in space.

What are the current TC members' interests?

  • Space Station on-orbit resources management

  • Advanced Supportability Concepts: In-space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM), flight hardware scavenging and reuse, resource pre-positioning, and consumables recycling.

  • Advanced Space Logistics Infrastructures: solar power stations, on-orbit fuel depots, reusable vehicles, and planetary or asteroid resource infrastructures.

  • Advanced Destination Logistics: outpost management and provisioning, in-situ resource logistics, EVA logistics.

  • Logistics of NASA, DoD, and Commercial Programs: space operations affordability, design for commonality, integrated logistics concepts

  • Space Logistics Campaign Planning: methods, modeling, simulation, and cost analysis tools

  • Automated spaceflight supply chain asset tracking and monitoring

  • Spaceport ground processing and launch logistics

  • Commercial space logistics opportunities

What is AIAA?

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), with over 30,000 professional and student members, is the oldest and largest technical society serving the aerospace profession. The goal of the AIAA is to address the interests and needs of the entire aerospace profession: engineers, researchers, managers and policy makers. To accomplish this, the AIAA involves corporations and professionals at all levels.
